Mainstreaming biodiversity in action: The BIODEV2030 initiative in Africa

The Post-2020 global biodiversity framework needs to tackle pressures on nature loss (e.g. agriculture). To this aim, the BIODEV2030 Initiative proposes an innovative approach to support building science-based sectoral biodiversity commitments in 16 countries. Both methodology and preliminary results will be discussed during this session.

Biodiversity needs to be mainstreamed. The BIODEV2030 initiative aims at empowering multiple stakeholders in 16 countries, including governments, the private sector and civil society, to jointly identify and engage in transformational changes in the economic sectors significantly impacting biodiversity. First, this session will illustrate the science-based diagnosis which undertaken, to identify key economic sectors to commit to the post-2020 global biodiversity framework in order to bend the curve of biodiversity erosion. Then stakeholders from different countries will present the multi-stakeholder dialogues which were engaged in order to jointly set commitments to reduce sectoral pressure on biodiversity. This session will illustrate how sectoral commitments, engaging together State actors, private companies and civil society, is possible. Stakeholders will present the powerful outcomes they see in this science-based dialogue process.
